A Once-in-a-Lifetime Catch, Preserved in Print

A Once-in-a-Lifetime Catch, Preserved in Print

Last December, I had the privilege of preserving not just an incredible catch, but a life-changing memory.

This barramundi was landed during Season 11 of the Million Dollar Fish competition, one of the Northern Territory’s most iconic fishing events. For the angler, it represented skill, patience, and an unforgettable win — a moment that would never be repeated.

From Water to Paper

Using traditional Gyotaku techniques, I captured the texture of the scales, the subtle markings, and the true presence of the fish exactly as it was in that moment. Look closely and you can see where the competition tag was attached, just below the dorsal fin.

After the printing process, the red tag was carefully hand‑painted back into the artwork, including the serial number, expiry date, and competition details — preserving not only the fish, but the full story behind the catch.

A Personal Commission

This piece was created as a private commission for one of the competition winners. Rather than producing a replica or reproduction, the intention was to create a single, meaningful artwork — a keepsake that holds the memory, not just the image.

The printing process is slow and deliberate, allowing space for respect, accuracy, and craftsmanship. The result is a one‑of‑a‑kind artwork tied directly to a once‑in‑a‑lifetime experience.

Why Commissions Matter

Commissioned Gyotaku prints are deeply personal. They are not about trophies or trends — they are about preserving memory, place, and a connection to the water.

Each commission begins with a story and ends with a print that cannot be repeated.

Commissioned pieces are created on a limited basis and begin with a conversation.

If you have a catch, moment, or story you would like preserved through print, you’re invited to enquire about a private commission, through our contact us page.

Some moments deserve more than a photograph.

They deserve to be preserved.
